EducationHanna Breunig, received her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering in 2010 at Cornell University. While at Cornell, Hanna focused her academic studies on water and wastewater treatment, and her undergraduate research on switchgrass biofuel development. She then went on to receive her Master of Science in Environmental Engineering in 2011 and her PhD in Environmental Engineering in 2015 at the University of California, Berkeley, with minors in Geographic Information Science, and Energy and Resources. Berkeley’s rigorous graduate Environmental Engineering program has been ranked number one by US News and World Report for 7 consecutive years, yet Hanna successfully graduated with a 3.9 GPA. Hanna received an Engineering and Business for Sustainability Certificate in 2012 from the College of Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, for her academic focus on the United States’ LEED building certification program.
Hanna completed her PhD research at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in the Environmental Energy Technologies Division where she led projects in industrial ecology, systems analysis, sustainable engineering, and life cycle assessment. While at LBNL, she gained experience conducting research at the nexus of industry, academia, and government on low-emission energy technologies for commercial buildings and power plants, including: artificial photosynthesis panels, proton exchange membrane fuel cells, carbon dioxide capture systems, and geothermal heat recovery.
ExperienceHanna has experience tutoring K-12 students in math and science. She believes the key to successful learning at this age is to building critical-thinking skills and to maintain a balance of humor, respect, and patience.
She has completed courses on effective teaching strategies and is always looking to improve her teaching techniques.
Hanna has taught courses in environmental engineering, civil engineering, and in energy and resources at the college level since 2007 at prestigious universities including Cornell and Berkeley. She has mentored students with diverse backgrounds, ranging from Moroccan to Japanese.
HobbiesHanna enjoys kayaking, cooking, and making cards. She loves to go hiking with her family, which includes three active boys!
